Four Days Later...

Good lord, I haven't been on here for four days now. A lot has happened and I really just haven't had the time or the concentration to write anything! Not to mention that on Thursday, Friday, and Sunday I hadn't taken any pictures to post and I felt like I needed to share something aside from words, but here it goes.

Thursday...meh, I don't need to recall Thursday. It involved cheap wine and Pabst and ended poorly. It didn't end poorly due to those two drinks really, but let's just say that the night was awful. Glad I won't be writing about it :)

Friday on the other hand was a lot of fun! I work as a Student Ambassador in the Admissions office here at Champlain College and Saturday was our first Accepted Students Day, which is an entire day of division meetings and tours for accepted students. This year, the admissions office decided to add in another event prior to Accepted Students Day. Bret Dewhurst, who is one of the admissions counselors, organized a new event on Friday night which consisted of a cocktail party for parents and a special edition of The Grind of accepted students. Every Wednesday in the Fireside Lounge, an open mic called The Grind, runs from 830-11PM. This Friday The Grind was open for the accepted students who had showed up to stay overnight due to the fact that they lived so far from Vermont. There was an excellent turn out and the Student Ambassadors had two jobs: mingle and bring kids back and forth from Perry Hall, where the cocktail party was taking place, to the Fireside Lounge to The Grind.

It was a little hectic, myself, Alex, Lloyd, and Natasha were a bit disorganized as to who would stay with the kids and mingle and who would run back and forth to Perry Hall to pick up more arrivals. Aside from that, the event went very well. The students were very timid and quiet at first, not really willing to talk to us or other students. It was expected of course, I would have been so intimidated and frightened being thrown into a group of twenty or more kids I didn't know at a place I had never been. After everyone settled in with free pizza, drinks, and some excellent live music, everything started to liven up. Groups of kids began to talk and play pool and ping pong, Natasha and I even joined in a few games. At around 8PM things were winding down and the parents were beginning to find their kids and head out, but not before Natasha and I were invited downtown with a group of kids. We had to refuse though, due to the fact that we had to get up at 530AM the following morning to prepare for Accepted Students Day. All in all I saw the event as really helpful and a great idea to be put into effect by Bret. I give it a thumbs up!

6AM. The ass crack of dawn. My eyelids were about 5,000 lbs, my entire body ached, and I was rushing around trying to get dressed in my uniform for my first Accepted Students Day as a Student Ambassador. Ready? I get to work...and I realize that I have completely forgotten my name tag in Andrew's room. It's now 7AM and I'm running back to McDonald Hall to get my name tag as soon as possible before my boss chews my head off. Andrew is dead asleep and doesn't hear me knocking on the door. I pounded and pounded, hard, but softly in case I woke up his roommate Christian. I even dashed upstairs to see if my RA, Leah, would let me in, but "she couldn't let me in without Andrew's permission". Irritated and at a loss, I slammed on Andrew's door and texted and called him repeatedly. Luckily he woke up and didn't want to punch me in the face and gave me my name tag. The day started in the Fireside Lounge with a hands in, assembly of Student Ambassadors, and a "Go Champ!" cheer!

My first task of the day was to sit my butt down at a table with RT and Josh Tubbs to help students plan their day. Appropriately named, the station was called "Plan Your Day". We were each given a schedule of the entire day and our job was to help students plan out their day knowing their major interest and if they had visited campus prior to Accepted Students Day. Unfortunately, none of us were familiar with the schedule because we hadn't seen it until that morning, but after a few students we got the hang of it. I had a blast just seeing a bunch of new faces. Even student's eyes were nervous, but once we all smiled at them they smiled back in relief. It felt really good to make them at ease as they began a very busy day with a big decision on their shoulders.

After three hours of planning out days, it was time to "flip the gym". That morning from 8-9AM, the gym was decorated with over 300 folding chairs facing a stage to hear a division meeting.  Our job was simple: remove all the chairs and set up tables for the job fair. Sounds simple I suppose, but it took over an hour to fold up all the chairs, set up each table, and make everything look like the floor plan. Definitely woke me up because I had to use physical strength to get the task done, this made me ready for the rest of the day.

To be honest, I'm always extremely nervous and anxious before giving a tours. Though I can talk easily in front of strangers, better than I can in front of people I know, I get so so so so scared before a tour. I get tongue tied and immediately forget anything I would need to say on a tour the second I approach a family. I feel as if everything I say will effect their decisions drastically, so I don't want to mess anything up. The rest of my day consisted of giving tours. I was kind of excited because I offered my room up for tours and throughout the day I got so many compliments on it! I only gave two tours, which I was thankful for, but they were very close and intimate and I was able to talk one on one with the families and the kids. The afternoon was spent at a table outside in the sunlight with all of the Student Ambassadors. I loved spending time with all of my coworkers at once rather than just on my shifts. They're honestly some of the nicest most enthusiastic people I know and I love working with them. They're not only coworkers, but becoming good friends.

At the fair that lasted from 11-3PM there was a live performance, food, and Vermont Apple Cider, which was my favorite part. During my lunch break I got to spend some time there and unwind a bit since the day itself was pretty stressful and tiring due to the fact that I didn't get to bed until 2AM the night before...probably a big mistake, but I may have learned from it.

As for Saturday night, I went to a coworker gathering with six of my coworkers in downtown Burlington. My coworker, Adam Tinker, had us over for a few drinks and some ruit. I really did enjoy seeing them out of the office as people rather than coworkers. Oh and Jess shotgunned a beer. Aha.

Whelp, Sunday was awesome and I honestly have no energy to write about it. I spent a wonderful day at the UMall, specifically to get McDonald's, with Andrew and then watched movies all day and put off homework. COOL.

Bye.
