As of January 17, 2012 I am an intern for Fomite Press! I've been working for Donna Bister and Marc Estrin for a week now, delving into my first project, and immersing myself in the world of non-profit publishing. Feel free to check out their website! http://fomitepress.com/. My reasoning for applying for this internship in the first place was pure curiosity. As a senior in the Professional Writing program I will have to complete and internship for a class, but as a sophomore I thought I might as well get a head start and learn a little bit more about the world I want to become a part of in the future.
Going into this internship I wasn't aware that it was fairly open. Donna and Marc want me to obtain skills that I want to learn, rather than something I may not be interested in. My main interest when it comes to the writing profession is copy editing. That being said, Donna and Marc sent me away from the interview with a book to edit! It's happened quickly and I was immediately overwhelmed, but now that I'm a week into the book and my edits are actually correct and "right on the money" I feel a lot more confident in my abilities to do a good job. Tim Brookes also offered his hand in my internship projects by proposing the idea of editing the books I'm given in my second-year portfolio class! There is help all around and I am so grateful for it! Thus far I have gotten through almost 50 pages, 150 more to go though!
As for the Champlain College Publishing Initiative, which I am also an editor for now, I am working on editing and co-authoring a book with my fellow peer Haley Kenyon. The book is about internships (how ironic!) It had been drafted last year and since has been left untouched. Our plan is to revamp the entire thing - strip all the interviews, unless we deem them useful, and rewrite the entire manuscript from scratch. It'll be a ton of work on top of Fomite editing and classes to earn my degree, but it will be worth it. This year has proven to be opportunistic! I may not be sleeping and I may constantly have my nose in a book, but the skills I'll be acquiring will pay off in the end!
I've been neglecting this blog, as I usually end up doing after a few small entries. This is yet another effort to keep up with it! The details may be scarce for now, yet they will improve, I promise! Not that anyone actually reads my entries, but I like to think that if someone is, they find it interesting!
